Backflow Device Testing

Why Test Backflow Devices

Water municipalities require that backflow devices be tested annually. They will send you a letter with a deadline for testing the device and sending a report to them. The tester will send in the report.

All mechanical devices can fail. An annual test safeguards the public water system from contamination. See below What is a Backflow Condition?

What happens if you are late?

Nothing. They will just send another letter.

What is the cost?

We charge about $35 per backflow device. The price varies slightly by geographic area.

Advanced scheduling

  • We need advanced authorization every year before we will perform the service.
  • If the service is added to an annual maintenance agreement, it will automatically renew annually and requires no further effort on your part.

What is a Backflow Condition?

  • Suppose the water supply stops for some reason—such as a broken water main.
  • Suppose your sprinkler system was turned on.
  • Suppose a sprinkler head when retracted sits under a puddle of water.
  • Suppose that your backflow device fails for some reason
  • Suppose a siphon situation occurs and this puddle of water gets pulled back into the municipal water supply.
  • Now suppose that lawn fertilizer had just been put on your lawn. Would you like to take the next drink of water contaminated by lawn fertilizer? It could be worse. We’ll leave that part up to your imagination…
