Replace Dead & Dying Plants

Inevitably some plants will decline and eventually die. The causes will vary. What should be done about it? That answer depends largely on YOU! If you care to make your environment aesthetically pleasant both for yourself and those around you, then perhaps you should solve the problem. But how? You could just replace the plants but what if they die again?

Evaluation

Generally it's a good idea to look for what went wrong.

• Too much or too little water is the most common cause
• Too much shade or too much sun can also cause trouble depending on the plant
• Was it an insect or disease problem?
• Possibly the plant is not well suited to our climate

Planting

After evaluating what went wrong you can hopefully make a better plant selection—one that will thrive.

• If the last plant failed, choosing a native plant could be a good bet
• Or, select a proven performer that is known to flourish in our area

Go Green!

• Native plants will generally thrive provided they like the site conditions .
• Little or no watering may be needed after establishment.
• Little or no additional fertilization may be required.
• Blend compost into the soil at the time of planting. Preferably in the entire area and not just in the hole that the plant is put into.
• Topdress with compost annually for weed control and ongoing fertility.
